The Belmar Historical Society (BHS) will present another program in their series of special Belmar 150th anniversary events.   The title of the program is “New Jersey Shipwrecks” and will take place on Monday, May 23rd at 7:00 p.m. at the Boro Hall Municipal Court Room, Sixth Avenue entrance.

Guest speaker, Dan Lieb, President of the New Jersey Historical Divers Association, Inc., will present an overview of shipwreck disasters off the Jersey Shore.  Mr. Lieb is an expert on New Jersey shipwrecks and has extensive experience relating to his research.  Naomi Reissner, BHS Trustee and Program Coordinator, said, “We are so fortunate to have Dan Lieb as our guest speaker for the shipwreck program.     He has an impressive resume and we know there is a lot of interest on this topic.   Belmar has its own local maritime stories along with some mysteries”.

For the past 300 years, the waters off New Jersey and New York have been a hub of maritime activity.    Over that same period of time, thousands of vessels have sunk off our shores, with the loss of thousands of lives.   Part of the vast “Graveyard of the Atlantic”, hundreds of these wreck sites have been identified over the years, and many more have not.   This program will provide an overview of the more well-known wrecks visited by divers and fishermen.

Join the BHS on Monday, May23rd, and learn more about this fascinating part of our maritime history right off the Jersey Shore.  Light refreshments will be served.

The BHS Museum and History Room at 900 E Street in the annex of the historic Union Firehouse, is open to the public observing Covid-19 safety protocols.  Our open hours are:  Mondays 2-4 p.m.; Thursdays 10-noon and every 2nd Saturday 1-3 p.m.  Plan a visit to learn about the resort town’s early development and unique history.   Visit our website at www.belmarhistoricalsociety.org.call (908) 309-3380, or contact the BHS at info@belmarhistoricalsociety.org, and visit on Facebook.
