Just Arrived from Ireland: Irish Indentured Servitude in Monmouth County
This Wednesday, March 16th Annual Business Meeting*: 6:30 pm Lecture begins: 7 pm Think you know your Irish history? O'No you don't! Join us on the Eve of St. Patrick's Day for a lecture that will help you amaze your family and astound your friends with your knowledge of this oft-misunderstood facet of Irish history. Director of Collections Bernadette Rogoff explores the little-known, heartbreaking and fascinating stories behind the importation of Irish men, women, and children into the colonies during the 18th century. Indentured servants - hailing from Ireland, Germany, England, and Scotland - supplemented the demand for colonial labor. By agreeing to sell themselves and their time anywhere from four to seven years, indentured servants hoped for a new life once their commitment was through. The fraught relationship between Caucasian indentured servants, African-American enslaved persons, and their owners, will be examined in this presentation. Bernadette is our most popular lecturer due to her informative and entertaining style. Register below to honor the memory of these long forgotten Americans just in time for St. Patrick's Day! *Those who do not wish to attend the annual business meeting can just sign on as usual at 7pm for the lecture! |
