In Real Life
May 17-September 3rd, 2021

In Real Life is focused on four local artists whose works are modeled after the ideals of Realism. Realism began as an artistic movement in France in the 1850’s by rejecting Romanticism and turning to portraying subjects with truth and accuracy. Realists wanted to show “real” contemporary people including unpleasant aspects of life. The changes brought on by the Industrial and Commercial Revolution was shown without beautifying the landscapes or people. The working class was shown with the same seriousness as other classes, heroic and dramatic emphasis was removed, and people were shown without romanticizing. Gustave Courbet, Honore Daumier, and Jean-Francois Millet were important figures during this movement.

The four artists in this exhibition are Mark Allen Natale, Nick Savides, Michael Schweigart, and Ted Walsh.
