Join us for an introduction to historic preservation regulations in New Jersey including the legal basis for local preservation ordinances, state and federal statutes that dictate historic preservation standards, and how to follow local design guidelines and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards to specify the proper building materials for approvals. About Our Speaker
Barton Ross, AIA, AICP, LEED AP BD+C is a preservation architect and city planner who has contributed to master plans for the Virginia State Capitol, the United States Capitol, the World Trade Center and Princeton University. Mr. Ross has been recognized for his dedication to historic preservation by the National Park Service, the Secretary of the Interior, the Vernacular Architecture Forum and the Society of Architectural Historians.
In addition to being the managing principal of Barton Ross & Partners, LLC, Mr. Ross serves on the Board of Directors for Preservation New Jersey, the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and sits on the Kent County Historic Preservation Commission. He is a graduate of Columbia University, the Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design and holds a master’s degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to forming his own firm, Mr. Ross was employed as a project architect by nationally recognized planning firms Beyer Blinder Belle in New York, NY, and Wallace Roberts & Todd in Philadelphia, PA. He also worked as an architectural designer with firms in Florida, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and Vermont. Mr. Ross is licensed to practice architecture throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region and is a qualified Historic Architect per the Secretary of the Interior’s Code of Federal Regulations, 36 CFR Part 61. He is a certified city planner, LEED green design professional, and holds an NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) Certificate.
About Q&A with PNJ

Q&A with PNJ is a project of Preservation New Jersey that seeks to highlight voices across New Jersey’s historic preservation community and bring their knowledge and expertise on a wide variety of historic preservation topics to the public. Q&A with PNJ will initially take place online, and run approximately one-hour. The session will start with a quick networking round (5-10 minutes) where all attendees will share their name and if applicable, affiliation. The session will end with 15 minutes of Q&A from the Audience.
