2020-10-01 to 2020-10-31 - New Jersey - Online - Lighthouse Challenge Virtual and In-Person

the whole month of October

(Virtual and in-person)

We were faced with the difficult decision this year of whether or not to cancel the 2020 Lighthouse Challenge. Instead, we decided to get creative and now we’re asking you to do the same. Through the month of October, you will be able to do the Lighthouse Challenge virtually. Just click on the “Challenge Sites” tab on our homepage. You will find all of the sites have a short history or description of that site and most have a video tour. After you learn a little about the site and take the tour, you will find a downloadable picture of that site to color – a great activity for kids.

Here’s where it’s your turn to get creative. You can assemble your artwork into a book or make a collage or whatever project you can think of. When you are done, please post it to our Facebook page, Lighthouse Challenge of NJ, so everyone can admire your creativity. If you would like to visit the sites, even though most are not open, and do a drive-by Challenge, you are welcome to do that also, take pictures and create a montage or assemble your photos and post them to Facebook. If you complete the Challenge by visiting all the sites, either by taking the virtual tour or driving by and taking photos, you can download the completion sticker. It’s all on the honor system – we will not be checking on you.

Lighthouses that are currently open are Absecon Lighthouse, Cape May Lighthouse and East Point Lighthouse. Grounds are open at Sandy Hook, Navesink Twin Lights and Tuckerton Seaport. They are only open their regular days and hours, not the Challenge hours, so please check their websites when planning on visiting. We encourage you to visit them when convenient for you rather than on the Challenge weekend so we can avoid crowds and long lines waiting to climb as all have restrictions on how many people are allowed in the lighthouse at one time.

The actual weekend of the Challenge, October 17th & 18th, the above open sites as well as US Lifesaving Station 30 will have their buildings open. The grounds at Sea Girt Lighthouse and Finns Point Light will also be open. Most sites will have 2020 Lighthouse Challenge t-shirts available for purchase.

Tuckerton Seaport is open to guests for outdoor only touring on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Pop-Up Gift Shop will also be open and offers the official 2020 Lighthouse Challenge T-shirt (while supplies last)!
