Relax, unwind and appreciate the near-shore environments of the tidal Swimming River, and the surrounding landscape. It’s easily the best deal around, as our own expert Park System Naturalists lead you through winding channels lined with tall, elegant marsh grasses, searching for hidden wildlife. Breathe in the fresh air while you explore the beautiful outdoors. This 1 1/2 hour guided kayak tour is a leisurely paddle to quietly witness wildlife on the water’s edge. Single and tandem kayaks are available, along with all necessary equipment. Novice paddlers welcome. Wear appropriate clothing that can get wet. Bring water, bug spray, binoculars, and a waterproof camera. Weight limits for kayaks are 250 lbs. for a single and 400 lbs. for a double.

Join a Park System Naturalist for an easy walk at Freneau Woods, a 196-acre park that is comprised mostly of woodlands and fields, and located along the headwaters of Matawan Creek and Lake Lefferts. Delve into stories of a forest recovering from centuries of change while soaking up the sounds of nature and basking in the area’s beauty. Our walk will be peppered with several stops along the way as we learn about the plants, animals, geology and rich human history of this special region. Please wear comfortable shoes, sneakers or boots that can get dirty or muddy.

Join a Park System Naturalist for a leisurely walk on well-maintained trails in our parks. We will explore a different park each session as we discuss seasonal points of interest, search for signs of wildlife and identify a bird or two. This is a free 1.5 to 2-hour program, but feel free to join in or drop out at any point during the walk. Dress for the weather as light rain is not a deterrent.

Ever wonder what wildlife lives at the Manasquan Reservoir? Join a Park System Naturalist for an extended boat tour as we go on the hunt for creatures in the evening hours. Bring your camera and have it ready because you never know what wildlife may show up with over 200 species of birds, 20 mammal species, and 25 reptile and amphibian species found at the reservoir. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars and/or camera as we will be stopping periodically along our ride if the opportunity for wildlife photography arises.

The 2019 Peto Cup Race Celebration and A-Cat Regatta will take place on Friday, June 28, 2019, at the Island Heights Yacht Club (66 River Avenue, Island Heights, NJ 08732). The A-Cat Sailboat Race Starts at 5:00 PM. This event will feature an American Barbecue, music by the New Jersey Party Band, and silent and live auctions. Open bar is sponsored by Mt. Gay Rum.
The cost is $40. Proceeds benefit the John F. Peto Museum, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. The success of this event literally keeps the Museum’s doors open and helps us achieve our mission of preserving John F. Peto’s legacy and presenting world-class exhibitions.

COLONIAL SUMMER CAMP June 24 - June 28, 2019 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  A one-week summer camp for children ages 6-14 will take place at Peachfield, the 18th-century farm property owned by the NSCDA-NJ in Westampton, New Jersey. The focus of the camp experience will be historical as reflected through the everyday life of children in the 18th century.
   Meet a real blacksmith at our 4th annual Colonial Summer Camp. Shear a sheep, clean and spin the fleece. Visit with chickens, goats and bunnies, spin wool on an authentic spinning wheel, and cook over an open pit as Colonials did hundreds of years ago. Learn calligraphy, paint a picture of a sandcastle and make soap. Learn how to weave baskets and make a quilt. Dress up like a Colonial and play Colonial games. Join new friends for lots of fun and adventure.

Join us for a series of eye-opening talks by Park System Naturalists to discover what’s lurking in the coastal waters of Monmouth County. The presentations are designed to inform the public of current issues, ecology and science research, and to inspire an appreciation for the local natural world.
The Jersey shore is home to many different species of sharks: great whites, bulls, blues, and threshers to name just a few. It’s also home to the infamous shark attacks of 1916, the first known shark attacks on swimmers in U.S. history, which inspired the book and movie “Jaws”. This talk will get into the history and ecology of sharks as well as why they are important to protect. Not to be missed by any shark enthusiast!

Historic Stony Brook: Gateway to Princeton History 1:00 PM -- Starts at Updike Farmstead, 354 Quaker Road, Princeton; tickets are $5
Before there was a "Princeton," six Quaker families established a community on the fertile ground along Stony Brook. This two-hour hike explores the lives of the early settlers and the community they established while following a portion of the trail George Washington took from Trenton to the Princeton Battlefield. Stops include the Stony Brook Meeting House and Burial Ground, walking a portion of the "hidden" back road into Princeton, and a view of the Battlefield.
