 For two days every December, the Eden Woolley House becomes more than a museum. Its galleries fill with holiday decorations, model trains, enchanting collections, hand-crafted gifts, and homemade baked goods. On the porch, the Ocean Township Garden Club sells freshly made wreaths.
   The occasion is the annual Holiday Weekend, and this year it falls on Saturday and Sunday, December 2 and 3 (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

   As part of the Westfield Historical Society’s First Wednesday Luncheon series, Dr. Kenneth Mirsky will be presenting a talk on the history of anesthesiology on December 6th, 2017. The event will begin at 12PM at the Echo Lake Country Club, located at 515 Springfield Avenue, Westfield.
    Dr. Mirsky grew up in Union, NJ, and graduated from Union High School. He earned his B.A. at Wesleyan University and his M.D. from Chicago Medical School, which has since become part of the Rosalind Franklin University of Health Sciences in North Chicago, Illinois. His medical training was in Philadelphia, serving an internship and anesthesia residency at the Presbyterian –University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, and a year’s fellowship in Cardiac anesthesia at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Passaic County - Paterson - Annual Gingerbread House Competition

December 4 to 8 – Passaic County
The Passaic County Historical Society is asking children under sixteen to enter its annual Gingerbread House Competition. There is no fee to enter! Just deliver your homemade gingerbread house to Lambert Castle, Monday December 4th- Friday December 8th between the hours of 9am-3pm. Please call ahead to arrange a delivery time, to (973)247-0085 ext 207.
 The houses will be on display in Lambert Castle (home of the Passaic County Historical Society) at 3 Valley Road, Paterson NJ, as a part of the museum's holiday tours, from December 13th-January 7th. All houses will be accepted, there are no rules against the use of glue, or non-edible components. The gift card prizes will be awarded based on visitor votes placed during the holiday tour season and winners will be notified by phone in January.

              Gingerbread Sunday at the Miller-Cory House Museum
   Spicy sweet gingerbread has long been a special part of the holiday season. Its many forms – houses, figures, and all kinds of cookies – hold a special appeal for children and adults alike. The Miller-Cory House Museum, 614 Mountain Avenue in Westfield, is celebrating this sweet treat. Children will make a decorative, nonedible gingerbread house and one additional craft to take home and will hear "gingery" stories. Light refreshments will be served. In the Frazee Building, members of the Cooking Committee will prepare early American recipes using ginger over the open hearth. Admission is $5.00 per child; accompanying adults are free.  Advance reservations must be made. Requests will be accepted via phone (908-232-1776) or email ( through November 28 and by phone only until noon on December 2. Please include your phone number in emails.

 The Batsto Citizens Committee, Inc. (BCCI) will host a holiday celebration; “Winter In the Pines “on Sunday December 3rd at Historic Batsto Village.
The headline event of the day will be a holiday musical presentation performed by New Jersey’s own troubador; Valerie Vaughn, from 1PM – 2PM in the Batsto Visitor Center auditorium. There is a $5.00/person admission fee the show.
   Valerie Vaughn is a singer, musician and songwriter from Tuckerton, N.J. who specializes in teaching through music the history and folklore of South Jersey. In addition to performing in her home state of New Jersey, she has performed in England and the Southwest of the United States.

On Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 2:00 PM, Ocean County Historical Society, 26 Hadley Avenue, Toms River, NJ, will host NJ resident, journalist, and freelance writer, Michael C. Gabriele. This popular author will present via Power Point his third book on NJ history, New Jersey Folk Revival Music, History and Tradition.
Learn how NJ shaped folk revival music into an art form, beginning with the bawdy tunes sung in colonial-era taverns to the folk songs that echoed through the Pine Barrens, to the 1800s and “Guitar Mania,” through the 20th century studio recordings in Camden.

Holiday House Tour Dates for the Kingsland Manor December 2nd and 3rd, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. A 1700s brownstone Dutch colonial steeped in history and decorated as a Victorian Christmas for the holiday season. Come explore the historic Homestead of the Kingsland family and beyond, set within park like grounds overlooking a pond and waterfalls.
 The Manor will be open for tours on December 2nd and 3rd as a part of the Essex County Historic Holiday House Tour from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
